ENERGY FRAUD
I found it my duty to inform you about the representatives of companies such as Summit Energy who come door to door and try to deceive people to sign electricity (or gas) contracts which will certainly cause them financial losses. I will appreciate if you forward this message to your contacts so that those who have signed the contract, can cancel it as soon as possible, before they have to pay for the cancellation fees as well.
The Summit Energy Representatives say that their so called All Day Price is 5.99 cents/kWh. This seems lower than even the Off-peak rate in the RPP which are as follow:
Off-peak 6.3 cents/kWh
Mid-peak 9.9 cents/kWh
On-peak 11.8 cents/kWh
However, the Summit Energy guys do not clarify that their clients also have to pay approximately 5.94 cents/kWh (on top of the 5.99 cents) for the Global Adjustment fees. Put together, the all day one rate of Summit Energy sums up to 11.93 cents/kWh which is even more than the On-peak rate of RPP which is 11.8 cents/kWh.
In places, like Windsor, where the three rates (Time-of-Use prices) are not yet in effect, the current single rate is 7.5 cents/kWh and those who have made contracts with Summit Energy are now paying 4.18 cents/kWh more than what they did before.
RPP prices, like the current price, are including the Global Adjustment fees, while Summit Energy's are plus the Global Adjustment fees. If you ask the representatives about the Global Adjustment fees, they say, "You are already paying it and you will pay it in future as well." They do not mention that it is excluded from their rate but included in RPP's rates. Summit Energy clients should also pay some extra charges for Administration Fees.
Although Summit Energy has an Ontario Energy Board License, such a swindling contract (and their deceitful efforts to cause people to believe an untruth) must be illegal. There should be a way to follow the matter legally and some citizens are trying. However, the least we can do now is to inform our relatives, friends and neighbors of the truth and help them save themselves from the fraud.
Summit Energy is not the only company who is doing this. The financial losses these companies cause to each individual may not be very significant but the moral loss they cause to the society is. The most precious principle they are undermining is the Mutual Trust among people which is the foundation of civilization. We have to and can do something.
With best wishes,
Kurosh Taromi
